Life in the UK Test Free Resources — How to Study Without Paying

The best free practice tests, websites, and study materials for the Life in the UK Test — and what you actually need to buy to pass.

Most people preparing for the Life in the UK Test want to know: what can I use for free, and what do I actually have to pay for? The short answer is that a lot of excellent free resources exist — but one thing you do need to buy or borrow is the official study handbook. Everything else, including hundreds of practice questions, is freely available online.

We’ve helped thousands of students through the Life in the UK Test at uAcademy, and the pattern is consistent: the students who pass first time combine the official handbook with regular free practice tests. The ones who struggle are usually those who skip the handbook entirely and rely only on third-party summaries, or those who do just one or two practice sessions before booking the real test.

The short answer: what’s truly free and what costs money

Here’s the honest breakdown before we go further:

ResourceFree?Notes
Official handbook (TSO)No — ~£12.99The only official study source. Must read this.
Free practice test websitesYesMultiple sites with 1,000+ questions each
uAcademy free practiceYesOfficial-format questions, no account needed
Official TSO appNo — ~£4.99Useful but not required if using free websites
Third-party premium coursesNoOptional — free sites are sufficient for most people
The actual testNo — £50Booked via gov.uk, paid once per attempt

The bottom line: you can do all your preparation for free (bar the handbook), but you must study the handbook itself. No summary or third-party site fully replaces reading it cover to cover.

What is the official study material — and why you need it

The official Life in the UK Test study material is a book called ‘Life in the UK: A Guide for New Residents’, 3rd Edition. It was published by TSO (The Stationery Office) on behalf of the Home Office, and every single test question is drawn from it.

i
Why the handbook matters

The official gov.uk guidance states clearly: ‘You’ll only be tested on information from the official Guide for New Residents.’ Free practice sites replicate the question formats, but if you haven’t read the source material, you’ll hit gaps in your knowledge the practice tests won’t fully plug.

The 3rd Edition was introduced in 2013 and has remained the standard for the test since — including for 2026. You can get it as a physical book (~£12.99), an eBook (slightly cheaper), or check if your local library has a copy. Some councils offer it free through their citizenship and settlement support services.

What’s in the handbook? It covers the history of Britain, British values and institutions, everyday life, and how the UK’s government works. It’s not long — most people can read it in an evening or two. The challenge is memorising specific details: dates, percentages, and facts that come up as exam questions.

The best free Life in the UK Test practice websites

Once you’ve read the handbook (or whilst you’re still working through it), free practice test sites are the best way to check what you’ve retained and identify gaps. Several high-quality free platforms exist.

Top Free Practice Sites — What to Look For
Questions from the 3rd Edition only. Some older sites still carry questions based on earlier editions that are no longer tested. Check any site you use claims to be updated for the current 3rd Edition.
Explanations when you get questions wrong. The best free sites don’t just mark you right or wrong — they explain the correct answer with reference back to the handbook section. This is how you actually learn the material.
Full mock tests (24 questions, 45 minutes). Practice tests should replicate the real exam format. Some sites let you pick topics to revise; others run full timed exams. You need both — topic practice AND full timed tests.
No paywall on core questions. Some platforms advertise ‘free’ but gate most questions behind a premium subscription. The sites we recommend keep core practice genuinely free.

Well-regarded free sites include lifeintheuktestweb.co.uk and thelifeinuktest.co.uk, both of which offer large question banks drawn from the 3rd Edition. At uAcademy, we also offer our own free Life in the UK Test practice — more on that below.

Watch out for outdated free sites

Not all free practice sites are created equal. Some haven’t been updated since 2013, and a few carry questions based on content that was removed from the handbook in subsequent printings. If a site doesn’t specifically mention ‘updated for 2026’ or ‘3rd Edition’, treat its questions with caution. Getting questions wrong from outdated sites is discouraging and wastes study time.

Does uAcademy offer free Life in the UK Test practice?

Yes. uAcademy’s free Life in the UK Test practice is available to anyone — no account or payment required. Our free practice questions are based on the official 3rd Edition handbook and follow the same 24-question, timed-test format you’ll face in the actual exam.

The free practice is separate from our full paid course, which includes extended question banks, detailed explanations, progress tracking, and study guides by topic. If you want the most structured route to passing, the full course is worth considering. But if you want to test your knowledge or supplement your own study, the free practice is a solid starting point.

The students who come to us having already done 20 practice tests pass far more consistently than those who book the real test after just a few sessions. Free practice is free — use it. Jay Lee, uAcademy

Free vs paid resources: what’s the actual difference?

This is a fair question, and worth being honest about. For the Life in the UK Test specifically, free resources are more than enough for the majority of people to pass.

The test itself is not designed to be particularly difficult — it tests knowledge of the handbook material, and that material is fixed. If you’ve read the handbook and done 10–15 solid practice tests, most people are ready. You don’t need a premium course to pass.

Where paid resources add value:

  • Structured revision schedules. Paid courses organise the material by topic and tell you which areas to prioritise based on question frequency.
  • Progress tracking. You can see which topics you’ve mastered and which need more work, without keeping your own notes.
  • Extended question banks. Paid platforms typically have 2,000–5,000+ questions vs. 500–1,500 on free sites.
  • Confidence for non-native readers. For students for whom English is a second language, structured courses with clearer explanations are often worth the investment.

How to study using only free resources — a practical plan

Here’s the approach we’d recommend if you’re working with free resources only. Most people are ready to sit the test within 2 to 4 weeks using this plan:

  1. Get the official handbook. Buy or borrow the 3rd Edition. Read it cover to cover once, without stopping to memorise everything. Get the big picture first.
  2. Do a baseline practice test. Before studying in detail, take one full practice test at uAcademy or any reliable free site. Your score tells you which areas need the most work.
  3. Re-read the handbook by topic. Focus on the sections you got wrong. The handbook is divided into chapters — work through them systematically, spending more time on weak areas.
  4. Do 5–7 more timed practice tests. Space these across a week. After each one, review every question you got wrong and find the answer in the handbook.
  5. Score above 90% consistently. When you’re scoring above 90% on fresh practice tests (questions you haven’t seen before), you’re ready to book. The real test pass mark is 75%, so 90%+ in practice gives you a comfortable buffer.
  6. Book the real test. Book at least 3 days in advance via gov.uk. Choose a test centre convenient for you — there are over 30 across the UK.
Study in short sessions, not long marathons

In our experience, students who study for 20 to 30 minutes per day over 2 to 3 weeks retain the material far better than those who do one 3-hour cramming session the night before. The handbook covers a lot of specific facts (dates, percentages, Acts of Parliament) that need repetition to stick — spread your practice out.

Mobile apps for free practice

If you prefer studying on your phone, a few options are worth knowing about.

The Official Life in the UK Test app is published by TSO (the same publisher as the handbook) and is available on both Google Play and the App Store. It costs a few pounds but is produced by the official source. If you want guaranteed accuracy and official question formats, this is the app version of the paid route.

Free apps exist on both platforms but vary significantly in quality. Many carry the same caveats as free websites: check they’re specifically updated for the 3rd Edition and not drawing from older material. The benefit of apps is that they let you do 5–10 minute practice sessions during commutes or lunch breaks — that kind of distributed practice is exactly what works for this type of factual exam.

Common mistakes when using free resources

We see the same errors regularly at uAcademy. Here are the ones to avoid:

Using free practice without reading the handbook first. Practice tests work best as a testing tool, not a teaching tool. If you haven’t read the source material, you’re guessing on questions and not learning why the answers are correct. Read the handbook first, even just once.

Over-relying on one free site. Different free sites draw slightly different question subsets from the handbook. Using two or three sites means you’re exposed to a wider range of questions and are less likely to have gaps in coverage.

Ignoring the questions you got right. After each practice test, most people only review what they got wrong. But it’s worth checking the ones you got right by luck (guessed correctly) — if you don’t know why the answer was correct, that’s a knowledge gap waiting to catch you out on the real test.

Booking before you’re consistently scoring above 90%. The £50 test fee is not refundable if you fail. Taking an extra week of free practice to get your scores comfortably above the pass mark is always cheaper than re-sitting.

How many practice tests should you do before sitting the real exam?

There’s no magic number, but in our experience training thousands of LITUK students, at least 10 full-length practice tests is a reliable preparation level for most people. That’s 10 tests of 24 questions each under timed conditions — not just topic-by-topic revision drills.

The reason for timed tests specifically: the real exam is 45 minutes for 24 questions, which sounds like plenty of time but can feel pressured if you’re not used to the format. Running timed practice tests gets you comfortable with the pacing so the real environment doesn’t throw you.

If you’re consistently scoring 20 or more correct (83%+) on fresh tests, you’re ready. If you’re still scoring 17 or 18 (around the borderline), do another 3 to 5 tests focusing on the topics where you’re losing marks, then re-test. Don’t book until the scores are comfortably above 18.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to pass the Life in the UK Test using only free resources?

Yes, many people pass using only free resources. The key is to study the official handbook (which you do need to purchase or borrow) combined with free practice test websites. Free practice platforms like lifeintheuktestweb.co.uk and uAcademy’s own free tests at uacademy.co.uk/free/life-in-the-uk-test/ provide more than enough questions to prepare thoroughly.

What is the best free Life in the UK Test website?

Several free sites are widely used: lifeintheuktestweb.co.uk, thelifeinuktest.co.uk, and lifeintheuktest.com all offer large question banks. uAcademy also offers free practice tests at uacademy.co.uk/free/life-in-the-uk-test/. The most important thing is that any site you use draws questions from the 3rd Edition of the official handbook — not from older editions.

Does uAcademy offer free Life in the UK Test practice?

Yes. uAcademy offers free Life in the UK Test practice at uacademy.co.uk/free/life-in-the-uk-test/. These are official-format practice questions based on the 3rd Edition handbook. You can access them without paying — no account required to get started.

Is the official Life in the UK Test handbook free to download?

No. The official handbook — ‘Life in the UK: A Guide for New Residents’ (3rd Edition, published by TSO) — is not free. It costs around £12.99 for the physical book or slightly less as an eBook. Some libraries stock a copy. Third-party websites sometimes provide PDF summaries, but these are not official and may be incomplete or inaccurate. We recommend buying or borrowing the official version.

How many practice tests should I do before the real Life in the UK Test?

In our experience with thousands of LITUK students, we recommend doing at least 10 full-length practice tests before sitting the real exam. Aim to consistently score above 90% on practice tests before booking — the real test is 24 questions with a 75% pass mark (18 correct), and scoring comfortably in practice reduces nerves on the day.

What is the pass mark for the Life in the UK Test?

The pass mark is 75% — you must answer at least 18 of the 24 questions correctly to pass. The test is 45 minutes long, though most people finish well within the time. You must score 18 or more correct answers; scoring 17 or fewer is a fail regardless of how close you are to 75%.
