Got Questions? We’ve Got Answers

Here are some of our most frequently asked questions about the British Citizenship Test. If your question is not listed here, then please Contact Us

The British Citizenship Test is a computer-based test with 24 questions. It is one of the requirements for anyone seeking Indefinite Leave to Remain in the UK or naturalisation as a citizen living in the UK. The test is designed to prove that the applicant has sufficient knowledge of British life and sufficient proficiency in the English language.

Yes, The Life in the UK test and the British Citizenship test is the same. The official name of it is “Life in the UK”, but it is sometimes called: British Citizenship test, UK Citizenship test, Living in the UK test, In the UK life test, Live UK test, and Life in the test UK. These tests are all the same, and there are no other tests apart from the one.

Citizens aged between 18 – 64 will need to take the exam if they are applying for British Citizenship, Settlement or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK. This is a requirement for every citizen making the application.

You WILL need to take the test if:

  • You are aged 18 – 64
  • You are applying for British Citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) in the UK.

You do NOT need to take the test if:

  • You are aged under 18
  • You are aged over 64
  • You’re unable to take the test due to Long Term Physical Illness or Mental Condition. You will be required to provide proof of this.

The time limit for the exam is 45 minutes.

The exam has 24 questions in total, and you must answer at least 18 questions correctly to pass.

The real exam has 24 questions that are randomly generated, and you will need to answer 18 questions correctly to pass. It’s important to know that the questions are random, and it’s a common misconception that one test centre has easier questions than another. This is not true, and all test centres have the same software for the tests.

The latest figures show that the pass rate is 64% which means out of 100 people, only 64 will pass the test. To give yourself the best chance to pass, please use the free materials in the handbook we’ve provided before you take the test.

When making a test booking for the real thing, please ensure that you’re booking directly from the UK Government website only. When you are booking the test, you will need to select your preferred test location in the United Kingdom and the date and time for the test. We would recommend that you book the test at your nearest test centre. To book your exam, please use the following link:

When you are booking the test, you will need to prove your identity. It’s important to note that the ID that you use to book the exam MUST be taken with you when you go to the test centre. If you don’t take the same ID, then you may not be allowed to take the test. The Home Office needs your ID as proof that you have taken and passed the test.

The following IDs are accepted:

  • Passport (Valid and Expired Passports are accepted)

There are two ways to prepare for the actual test. The first method is by reading a study guide which has all of the information required for the test.

The second is by practising with our free online practice exams. We’ve created several tests that are almost identical to the real test, and you should practice them before booking the real exam. The free tests that are provided have been developed by an expert team of immigration advisers.

We would strongly advise completing all of the practice tests and our free handbook, as this will give you the best chance of passing.
It is also wise to practice your English speaking and writing skills and seek guidance if you need help in that area. A good knowledge of the English language will simplify your study and speed up the learning process.

We have also created a British Citizenship course, which has over 500 test questions and a study guide.

The online tests that we’ve created are very realistic and almost identical to the actual exam paper, helping candidates to be prepared before the real thing. We have a strict time limit on them too, which replicates the real test. The questions in our exam have been in real exams, and you may see them again. We would highly recommend completing all of the practice exams to support your study and guide you towards success.

Yes! You must arrive at least 15 minutes early. The test centre will take your ID and verify it, which will take approximately 15 minutes. You will then have 45 minutes to complete the exam, and the results should be available within 5 minutes after completing the exam. If you pass the exam, then you will be given your Pass Certificate immediately, and you can leave with it.
Please ensure you allow 1.5 hours for the whole procedure.

Yes! You will need to bring the same ID that you used when booking the exam online. The picture on the ID must show a true likeness of yourself for the Home Office records.

Residents may be refused to complete the exam if they fail to bring the correct ID

Some test centres may allow a guide or companion, but most do not. Please check with the test centre before the exam date. Residents are allowed to bring guests to the British Citizenship Ceremony.

To pass the Official British Citizenship Test , you must score 75% or more. This means that you will need sufficient knowledge of the information provided in the study guide to answer at least 18 questions correctly out of 24 questions.

The latest figures state that out of 100 people that take the test, only 64 pass and 36 will fail. Due to this, it’s important to be prepared for the exam by studying and practising with test papers and digesting all the information you can from the learning material provided in this time.

If you fail the test, you will need to wait at least seven days before booking another test. During this period, we recommend that study and practice with our exams, which will guide you towards a better outcome. You will need to pay £50.00 to book another exam.

There is no limit on the number of times you can attempt the exam, but each time it will cost £50.00, which needs to be paid for immediately with a debit or credit card.

If you pass the test, you will receive a pass certificate immediately at the test centre, and you can take it with you immediately.

The British Citizenship Pass Certificate does NOT have an expiry date, and residents can use it for their British Citizenship or Settlement Application.
