CeRER Cost 2026 — How Much Does the Equity Release Qualification Cost?

A clear breakdown of every cost involved in getting CeRER qualified — Walbrook fees, course costs, resit fees, and how to keep your total spend as low as £364.

The Certificate in Regulated Equity Release (CeRER) is the standard route for CeMAP-qualified mortgage advisers who want to add equity release to their practice. Costs are less complicated than CeMAP — there are fewer units, fewer providers, and the total spend is lower. But the fee structure is still often misunderstood, particularly the split between the mandatory Walbrook registration fee and the optional training course on top.

This post gives you a complete, honest cost breakdown for 2026 — including what the £265 Walbrook fee actually covers, what happens if you need a resit, and the cheapest route to getting qualified without cutting corners on preparation.

The short answer

The minimum realistic cost to complete CeRER in 2026 is around £364. That breaks down as £265 for the mandatory Walbrook registration (which includes materials and first exam entry) plus £99 for an online course from a provider like uAcademy.

If you go the classroom route — a two-day intensive with a tutor — you’re looking at £500 to £700 in total. The quality of preparation is similar; the difference is learning style and schedule flexibility.

One thing most guides miss: the Walbrook registration fee is unavoidable. No matter which course provider you choose, you pay Walbrook directly for exam access. The course cost is separate and optional — though highly recommended if you want to pass on your first attempt.

What does the £265 Walbrook registration fee cover?

Walbrook Institute London (formerly The London Institute of Banking & Finance, LIBF) is the awarding body for CeRER. When you register with Walbrook, the £265 registration fee includes:

  • Access to official Walbrook learning materials for both units
  • Your first exam entry for FOER (Fundamentals of Equity Release)
  • Your first exam entry for EQRS (Equity Release Solutions)
  • 12 months of access to the Brightspace exam platform

What it does not include is a training course, tutor support, or mock exams. Those come separately, either through your employer or a provider you choose yourself.

i
Walbrook registration is always paid directly to Walbrook

Some providers include the Walbrook fee in their quoted price and handle registration on your behalf. Others quote only their course fee and expect you to register with Walbrook separately. Always confirm which model applies before paying — you should never pay the Walbrook fee twice.

How much does a CeRER training course cost?

Training courses are separate from the Walbrook registration fee. They are not mandatory, but in our experience the pass rate difference between candidates who use a structured course and those who rely solely on Walbrook materials is significant. We see this pattern constantly with our CeRER students at uAcademy — candidates who attempt the exam on Walbrook materials alone, without practising case studies or working through mock exam questions, are more likely to struggle on EQRS in particular.

Course prices in 2026 break down roughly as follows:

Provider typeTypical course feeFormatBest for
Online self-paced£99–£150Video + mock examsFlexible schedules, budget-conscious
Virtual classroom£250–£350+VATLive 2-day tutor-ledThose who prefer structured learning
In-person classroom£300–£400+VATLive 2-day tutor-ledNetworking, hands-on case study practice
Employer-funded£0 to youVariesAdvisers whose firm covers training costs

The uAcademy CeRER course is £99 and covers both FOER and EQRS with structured video lessons and 12 practice exam papers specifically built around the 2026 Walbrook specification. It’s the format we’d recommend for advisers who need flexibility around client appointments.

Online vs classroom vs self-study — full cost comparison

Here is the full total cost picture, including the mandatory Walbrook registration fee, for each route:

CeRER full cost breakdown 2026
Walbrook registration fee Mandatory — materials + first exam entry for both units
£265
Online course (e.g. uAcademy) Video lessons + 12 mock exam papers
£99
Classroom / virtual classroom (alternative) 2-day intensive, tutor-led — replaces online course above
£300–£420+VAT
Specimen exam papers (optional) £25 per unit or £40 for both — from Walbrook direct
£0–£40
Total (online route) from £364

The self-study route — Walbrook materials only, no course — would cost £265 in theory. We don’t recommend it. EQRS case studies in particular require exam technique that the Walbrook materials alone don’t develop.

What happens if you fail? Resit fees explained

If you don’t pass a unit on your first attempt, Walbrook charges a resit fee of £110 per unit. Since there are two units — FOER and EQRS — a worst-case scenario of resitting both adds £220 to your total spend. That’s not catastrophic, but it is avoidable.

!
Resits delay your ability to advise on equity release

Every resit adds weeks to your timeline. In a practice where clients want advice quickly, that delay has a commercial cost beyond the £110 fee. Preparing properly — especially on EQRS case study technique — is genuinely worth the investment in course materials before you sit.

The most common reason we see CeRER candidates resit is underestimating EQRS. FOER is 50 straightforward multiple-choice questions — most candidates pass it comfortably. EQRS uses three case studies, each with 10 linked questions, and requires you to apply regulatory knowledge to real client scenarios. It rewards exam technique, not just knowledge. Candidates who practice case studies perform significantly better.

CeRER is shorter than CeMAP but not simpler. EQRS catches people out every time — not because the content is hard, but because the format is unfamiliar. Jay Lee, uAcademy

The CeMAP+CeRER bundle — is it cheaper to study both together?

If you haven’t started CeMAP yet, the most cost-effective route to being fully dual-qualified is the uAcademy CeMAP+CeRER bundle, which covers both qualifications together for £268 — saving over £100 compared to buying each separately.

For advisers who are already CeMAP-qualified and just adding CeRER, there’s no bundle advantage: you only need the CeRER course. But for those starting from scratch, studying both qualifications in one purchase makes sense financially and logistically. At uAcademy, we’ve found that students who study CeMAP and CeRER sequentially through the same platform transition to CeRER faster because the learning environment is already familiar.

Check if your employer will fund your CeRER course

Many mortgage brokerages and lenders fund CeRER training for CeMAP-qualified staff who are expanding into equity release. Before paying out of pocket, ask your employer — it’s a reasonable business case since the qualification directly increases your commercial value to the firm.

How long does CeRER take to complete?

Most candidates complete CeRER in 4 to 8 weeks with structured study. Walbrook gives you 12 months from registration to pass both units, but in practice almost nobody needs that long. CeRER is a shorter qualification than CeMAP — two units rather than the CeMAP modules — and the content builds directly on what you already know from mortgage advice.

The typical timeline for an online self-paced student:

  • Weeks 1–2: FOER content — equity release market, regulation, product types, eligibility
  • Weeks 3–4: EQRS content — case studies, suitability assessments, client scenarios
  • Weeks 5–6: Mock exam practice, sitting FOER and EQRS in sequence

Classroom candidates compress this into a two-day intensive followed by booking exams immediately. Some sit both units in the same week as the course. That’s achievable but requires solid pre-reading beforehand — don’t arrive at a two-day CeRER classroom course without having reviewed the equity release basics first.

What does the CeRER exam look like?

CeRER consists of two units, both taken online with remote invigilation through Walbrook’s Brightspace platform. You can sit from home at any time — no test centre required.

FOER — Fundamentals of Equity Release: 50 multiple-choice questions. Tests knowledge of the equity release market, the regulatory framework, and product types. Most candidates find this the more straightforward of the two units.

EQRS — Equity Release Solutions: Three case studies, each with 10 linked multiple-choice questions (30 questions in total). Each case study presents a client scenario and asks you to select appropriate advice, identify regulatory requirements, and assess suitability. This is where exam technique matters most.

You must pass each unit independently — there’s no averaging across the two. The pass mark is 70% per unit. You can sit FOER and EQRS in either order or on the same day; most candidates sit FOER first because the knowledge is more fundamental, then move to EQRS once confident on the basics.

Both exams are available on demand through the Brightspace platform with no advance booking required. Once registered with Walbrook, you schedule exams at your convenience within your 12-month access window.

Frequently asked questions

How much does CeRER cost in total?

The minimum total cost for CeRER is around £364 — that’s the £265 Walbrook registration fee plus a £99 online course from a provider like uAcademy. If you choose classroom training instead, expect to pay £500 to £700 in total. The Walbrook fee covers your learning materials and first exam entry for both units.

What does the £265 Walbrook registration fee include?

The £265 Walbrook registration fee includes access to the official Walbrook learning materials for both units (FOER and EQRS) and your first exam entry for each unit. It does not include resit fees — if you need to resit a unit, that costs an additional £110 per unit. It also does not include external training courses, which are optional but recommended.

How much does it cost to resit a CeRER unit?

Each CeRER unit resit costs £110, payable directly to Walbrook. There are two units — FOER and EQRS — so if you needed to resit both, that would add £220 to your total cost. Passing first time saves you both the resit fee and the time delay before you can advise clients on equity release.

Do I need CeMAP before I can take CeRER?

Yes. CeRER requires you to already hold CeMAP (Certificate in Mortgage Advice and Practice) or an equivalent Level 3 mortgage advice qualification recognised by the FCA. You cannot sit the CeRER exams without meeting this prerequisite. If you do not yet hold CeMAP, you will need to complete that first.

How long does CeRER take to study?

Most students complete CeRER in 4 to 8 weeks with structured study. Walbrook gives you up to 12 months from registration to complete both units. Candidates who use a course alongside the Walbrook materials typically pass faster — our students at uAcademy commonly sit both units within 6 weeks of starting.

Is the CeRER exam online or in a test centre?

CeRER exams are taken online with remote invigilation via Walbrook’s Brightspace platform. You can sit both units from home at a time that suits you — no test centre booking required. FOER is 50 multiple-choice questions and EQRS is three case studies with 10 linked multiple-choice questions each.
