The short answer: where are the Life in the UK test centres?

Life in the UK test centres are spread across every region of the UK, from Aberdeen in the north to Plymouth in the south. Every centre is approved and administered by PSI Services on behalf of the Home Office. When you book through the official GOV.UK website, the system automatically shows you the five centres closest to your home postcode — you then pick the one that works for you.

You do not have to use your nearest centre. Some test-takers prefer a centre in a city they know well, or one with specific accessibility features. That is entirely your choice.

i
Booking is done online only

You cannot walk in and take the test. All bookings are made at least 3 days in advance through gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. You’ll need an email address, a debit or credit card and an accepted form of ID.

How do I find a Life in the UK test centre near me?

The simplest route is to start your booking on the GOV.UK website. Once you’ve entered your details and home postcode, the booking tool surfaces the five closest centres with available dates. You pick the centre, choose a slot and pay the £50 fee.

If you want to see the full list before you start the booking process — to check addresses or accessibility features in advance — the sections below cover every approved centre alphabetically, exactly as we’ve confirmed them with PSI Services.

Tip from our experience training thousands of LITUK students

Many test centres are on upper floors of commercial buildings. Arrive 15 minutes early, find the right floor and settle yourself before the test window opens. In our experience, arriving rushed is one of the most preventable sources of anxiety on test day.

Addresses do change

PSI occasionally relocates centres. Always confirm the address on the official booking confirmation email before you travel — do not rely solely on this page for navigation on test day.

What to expect at the test centre on the day

The test itself is short — 45 minutes, 24 questions — but the process around it can feel daunting if you’ve never been to a PSI testing centre before. Here’s what actually happens.

You’ll arrive at the centre and check in at reception. A staff member will verify your identity using the same ID you used when booking (names must match exactly). They’ll ask you to store your personal belongings — phone, bag, coat — in a locker or at the front desk. No notes or study materials are allowed into the testing room.

You then sit at a computer workstation. The test is entirely multiple-choice: for each of the 24 questions, you choose one answer from four options. The study material is the official ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents’ handbook — everything on the test comes from that book and nothing else.

Your result is shown on screen immediately after you finish. If you pass, you’re given a pass notification letter. Hold onto this — you’ll need it when you apply for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.

What our students tell us is that the test itself is rarely the hard part — it’s the unfamiliarity of the centre and the format that creates nerves. Once you’ve sat one practice test under timed conditions, the real thing feels much more manageable. Jay Lee, founder of uAcademy

Accessibility and special requirements at Life in the UK test centres

Most PSI test centres across the UK offer wheelchair access and guide dog facilities, as you can see in the table above. But ‘wheelchair accessible’ covers a range of provision, and not all centres are equal — some are on upper floors with lifts, others are ground floor with level access.

If you have accessibility needs beyond standard wheelchair access — for example, you require extra time, a larger font, or a specific seating arrangement — you should contact the PSI helpline before booking to confirm what adjustments are available at your preferred centre. The helpline number is 0800 015 4245 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm), or you can email support@lituk.psionline.com.

Guide dogs at PSI centres

Guide dogs are permitted at most PSI test centres. Confirm in advance with your specific centre — the contact details will be in your booking confirmation email.

How to book your Life in the UK test

The booking process is straightforward. You do everything through the official GOV.UK service — there is no phone-in booking option.

  1. Go to gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test. This is the only legitimate booking website. Third-party sites that charge extra fees to ‘help you book’ are not official and should be avoided.
  2. Create an account or sign in. You’ll need an email address. The name you enter must match your ID exactly — middle names, hyphens, capitalisation all count.
  3. Choose a test centre. Enter your home postcode and the system shows the five nearest centres with available slots. Pick the date and time that works for you.
  4. Pay the £50 fee. Payment by debit or credit card. The booking is confirmed by email.
  5. Bring your ID on the day. The accepted forms of ID are listed in your confirmation email. Passport, biometric residence permit and national identity card are commonly accepted.

Book at least 3 days in advance — the system will not allow same-day or next-day bookings.

How to prepare for the Life in the UK test

The test draws entirely from the official handbook: ‘Life in the United Kingdom: A Guide for New Residents’ (3rd edition). Every question has its answer somewhere in that book. There are no trick questions, no questions about current events and nothing outside the official study material.

In our experience training thousands of students who have taken this test, the ones who struggle are nearly always the ones who tried to read the handbook passively rather than actively testing themselves as they went. Reading and recalling are very different mental tasks.

Our free practice tests at uAcademy replicate the real test format — 24 questions, 45 minutes, randomised question order — so you get a realistic sense of your readiness before you spend £50 on a slot.

The most common mistake we see

Students who read the handbook cover-to-cover once and then book the test. You need active recall practice — not passive reading. Take at least 5 full mock tests before you book. Our data shows students who do this pass at a significantly higher rate than those who don’t.

Life in the UK test cost and cancellation policy

The standard test fee is £50. This applies at all PSI test centres across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland — there is no price variation by location.

If you need to cancel or reschedule, you must do so at least 72 hours (3 days) before your scheduled test. Cancel inside that window and you forfeit the fee. Cancel with at least 3 days’ notice and you get a full refund. Rescheduling is possible and does not cost extra if done with sufficient notice.

If you fail the test, you can book again straight away — there is no waiting period. You pay the £50 fee again for each attempt.

Who needs to take the Life in the UK test?

The Life in the UK test is a legal requirement for most people applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR) or British citizenship. It is also required for some settlement applications. You are exempt if you are under 18, aged 65 or over, or have a long-term physical or mental condition that prevents you from studying for the test — in those cases you must provide supporting evidence with your application.

If you have previously passed the test, you do not need to take it again. Your pass notification letter is proof of this.

Frequently asked questions about Life in the UK test centres

Can I take the Life in the UK test at any centre in the UK, or does it have to be near my home?

You can take the test at any approved PSI test centre in England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland — it does not have to be near your home address. The booking system shows you the five closest centres first, but you can search more broadly if you prefer a different location. Some people choose a city they know well or a centre with specific accessibility features rather than the geographically nearest option.

What ID do I need to bring to a Life in the UK test centre?

You need to bring the same form of ID you used when you made your booking. The name on your ID must match the name on the booking exactly. Commonly accepted forms include a passport, biometric residence permit (BRP) or national identity card. Your booking confirmation email will list the accepted ID types. If your name on your ID does not exactly match your booking, you may be turned away and lose your fee.

How many questions are on the Life in the UK test and what score do I need to pass?

The test has 24 questions. You have 45 minutes to complete them — though most people finish well within that time. You need to answer 18 correctly (75%) to pass. Questions are multiple-choice with four options each. The test is taken on a computer at the PSI test centre and your result is shown on screen immediately after you submit.

What happens if I fail the Life in the UK test?

If you fail, you can rebook and take the test again as soon as you like — there is no mandatory waiting period between attempts. You will need to pay the £50 fee again for each attempt. Your test result is shown on screen straight away, so you know immediately whether you passed or failed. The good news is that the test content does not change — it all comes from the same official handbook — so a targeted review of weaker areas before your next attempt is usually enough to push you over the pass mark.

Can I reschedule my Life in the UK test booking?

Yes — you can reschedule your test at no extra charge, provided you do it at least 3 days (72 hours) before your test time. If you try to reschedule inside that window, you will lose your fee. Log in to the booking system at gov.uk/life-in-the-uk-test to manage your booking. If you cancel completely with at least 72 hours’ notice, you receive a full refund.

Is the Life in the UK test available online or at home, or does it have to be at a test centre?

The Life in the UK test must be taken in person at an approved PSI test centre. There is no online or remote version of the official test — any website claiming to offer a legitimate ‘at-home’ Life in the UK test for immigration purposes is not offering the real thing. Practice tests online (including ours at uAcademy) are fine for preparation, but the real test for your visa or citizenship application must be sat at one of the official centres listed on this page.
