The Qualification

What Is the CeRER Qualification?

CeRER (Certificate in Regulated Equity Release) is a Level 3 specialist qualification for mortgage advisers who want to advise on equity release products. It covers lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans — two regulated product types that allow homeowners aged 55+ to release tax-free cash from their property.

The qualification is awarded by The London Institute of Banking & Finance (LIBF), part of Walbrook Institute London. It’s registered with Ofqual on the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) and meets the Financial Conduct Authority’s (FCA) standards for equity release advisers.

You need CeMAP or an equivalent Level 3 mortgage qualification before you can study CeRER. The course then takes you through two focused units — Fundamentals of Equity Release (FOER) and Equity Release Solutions (EQRS) — preparing you for a single 2-hour exam covering both.

Experienced Advisers

Equity release is one of the fastest-growing areas of UK financial services. Total lending reached £2.57 billion in 2025 — an 11% increase on the previous year — and the FCA is launching a dedicated later life lending market study in 2026. That growth means rising demand for qualified advisers.

As a specialist skill set on top of CeMAP, equity release qualification typically commands higher earning potential than standard mortgage advice alone. Advisers with CeRER can work in dedicated equity release firms, brokerages, or banks — and many earn commission on top of their base salary. Read more about adviser salaries →

Sample CeRER Question — EQRS Case Study Style

Mrs Johnson, aged 72, owns her home outright (valued at £320,000) and wants to release £40,000 to help her grandchildren with university fees. She wants to remain in her home. Which of the following would be the most suitable initial recommendation?
  • A. A home reversion plan releasing 100% of the property value
  • B. A drawdown lifetime mortgage allowing her to release funds as needed
  • C. A standard residential remortgage with monthly repayments
  • D. Selling the property and renting
Why B? A drawdown lifetime mortgage lets Mrs Johnson release an initial lump sum and keep a reserve facility for future needs, while retaining ownership of her home. Interest only accrues on funds actually drawn. A full home reversion (A) would be disproportionate. A standard remortgage (C) requires income-based repayments. Selling (D) doesn’t meet her wish to stay in the property.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions About CeRER

What is CeRER?
CeRER stands for Certificate in Regulated Equity Release. It’s a Level 3 specialist qualification awarded by LIBF (The London Institute of Banking & Finance) that allows mortgage advisers to advise clients on equity release products — specifically lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans. It’s registered with Ofqual and meets FCA examination standards.
Do I need CeMAP before I can study CeRER?
Yes. CeRER requires you to hold CeMAP or an equivalent Level 3 mortgage qualification first. If you don’t have CeMAP yet, our full CeMAP course is £198 and covers all five units with 274 lessons.
How much does the uAcademy CeRER course cost?
£99 as a one-time payment. This includes all 53 lessons, 12 mock exams, expert tutor support, and 12 months of access. The LIBF exam registration fee (~£250–265) is separate and paid directly to LIBF. You can also purchase just the CeRER mock exams for £19 if you’re studying elsewhere.
How is the CeRER exam structured?
It’s a single 2-hour exam covering both units. Unit 1 (FOER) has 50 standalone multiple-choice questions. Unit 2 (EQRS) has 3 case studies with 10 linked multiple-choice questions each (30 questions). That’s 80 questions total. You must score 70% or above in each unit to pass.
Can I sit the CeRER exam from home?
Yes. LIBF offers remote proctored exams through their Brightspace platform. No advance booking is needed — you just need a laptop with a webcam and a quiet room. You’ll do a 360° room scan before starting. Alternatively, you can sit the exam at a Pearson VUE test centre.
How long does it take to complete CeRER?
Most students complete the course within a few weeks to 2 months alongside their day job. You have 12 months of access from purchase. With the pass guarantee, you can get an additional 12 months free if needed.
What’s the difference between lifetime mortgages and home reversion plans?
A lifetime mortgage is a loan secured against your home that doesn’t require monthly repayments — the interest rolls up and the loan is repaid when you die or move into care. A home reversion plan involves selling all or part of your home to a provider in exchange for a lump sum or regular payments, while retaining the right to live there rent-free. Lifetime mortgages are far more common — they make up over 99% of the equity release market.
How much do equity release advisers earn in the UK?
Salaries vary, but entry-level equity release adviser roles typically start around £30,000–£35,000 with an OTE of £50,000+. Experienced advisers with established client books can earn £70,000 or more, with some self-employed advisers earning significantly higher through commission. It’s a specialist niche with growing demand.
Is uAcademy an LIBF Accredited Learning Support Provider?
No. LIBF is not currently accepting new ALSP applications. Our course is updated to the latest LIBF specification and has helped over 2,000 students prepare for their professional qualifications with a 5.0 star Google rating. Using an ALSP is not a requirement of CeRER studies — LIBF states this clearly on their own website.
What happens if I fail the CeRER exam?
You can rebook and resit the exam. The resit fee is £110, paid directly to LIBF. Our pass guarantee means your uAcademy course access will be extended for an additional 12 months free if you haven’t passed by your expiry date, so you can keep studying and retake when ready.
